A Clinical Study on Septal Deformity

Abstract
Septal deformity is one of the most important diseases in otolaryngology and frequently associated with other important otolaryngological problems.
This paper was attempted to analyze 119 cases of septal deformity which had undergone submucous resection during 3 years from September 1975 till August 1978 in the Chung-Ang University Hospital.
The results were as follows;
1. Septal deformity occurred most commonly in the 20-24 age group, and the majority of patients in the 20-34 age group.
2. Septal deformity occurred more commonly in male (88 cases, 73.9%) than in female (31 cases, 26. 1%). The ratio was 2.8 to 1.
3. Septal deformity occurred more commonly in the left side than in the right side, and the ratio was 1.4 to 1. As to deformed shape ridge was found in 64 cases (53.800), deviation in 27 cases (22.7%), and spine in 19 cases (16.0%).
4. As to chief complaint, nasal obstruction was found in 75 cases (63.0%), rhinorrhea in 23 cases (19. 3 %), headache in 11 cases (9. 2%), recurrent epistaxis in 5 cases (4.2%), anosmia in 4 cases (3.4%) and otorrhea in one case (0. 8%). Nasal obstruction was the most common complaint.
5. As to associated diseases, paranasal sinusitis was in 43 cases (36. 1%), hypertrophic rhinitis in 37 cases (31. l%), and nasal polyp in 10 cases (8.4%). The majority of paranasal sinusitis occurred bilaterally, and the majority of hypertrophic rhinitis in the wider side of nasal cavity.
6. Only 5 cases (4.2 %) of septal deformity had trauma history.
